It’s been a month….

Woa, this job is pretty awesome. The night shifts for a while were 15 hours, I did like 75 hours that week. Its cool tho. I’m on days now so its a little more high-strung, like the management is there and stuff. But at least we know when we’ll be done. Some cool clients have been in. Today was slow so I got to check out the gear and get a little hands-on with it. definitely learning a lot. So far its really cool.

I also recorded a song with this girl, Jess. We’re probably about 85% done recording it. Its come out pretty good so far. If it turns out good it could end up in the short film she is in and based the song off of. So that would be really fucking awesome.

New Job

So, I’m working at Jim Henson Recording Studios. Its pretty cool so far. I’ve only worked two days, tonight I’m on the nigh shift for day 3. I’m a runner, so I do a lot of seemingly stupid stuff but its all the things that go into making the studio experience go well for artists. I have to make sure all the studios and lounges are clean and stocked up on snacks, drinks, coffee, pens, papers, markers, etc. I go to starbucks like 5 times a day, haha. I make the runs to restaurants and stores for lunch or anything else an artist may want throughout the day. It’s pretty cool and all the mixers and even management here started as runners.

Working on the next episode of Earbud Theater as well. I’m doing the whole mix and sound design for this one. Its pretty cool and I can’t wait for it to be released. As always I’ll post a link here.

All in all, everything is going well right now. I no longer work in restaurants and am employed full time(7 days a week possibly) at a recording studio. Pretty freak’n sweet.

A week and a half in L.A.

So, its pretty awesome out here. Applied at a studio and a venue as well as a few restaurants so far. Possibly may get a job at Domino’s. It’s something to pay the bills for now. Tomorrow I have a list of about ten venues and studios I’m going to apply for. They’re all within a few blocks of each other. Over the weekend I’m going to map out other areas to hit. Gonna look at some post-production houses.

Talked to a guy today who seemed really cool. He’s from Mayfair and Father Judge, like me. He’s an established writer out here and seems like he really wants to help me out. He knows a few sound guys and is gonna take me to Fox Studios next week. He seems very Philly-like. So I’m pretty stoked about that.

I also have a job on Halloween with a lighting production company. So, it may not be audio but its a job and its a step in the right direction. Last few days were pretty stressful but today went pretty well. All in all I think it’ll all work out.

In Northeast Philly born and raised…..

So, I moved to Los Angeles. It is awesome here! I never want to leave. So, I’m here to follow my dream. Being a bit of a tourist while my sister and dad are here but Thursday starts working. To prepare for this, I’m obviously doing research on places for work. But I’m also looking at things to remind me why I’m here. Im re-reading “Tough Shit” by Kevin Smith. If you want a job in the media arts read that book. Its about another east coast no body who made it. Kevin Smith is a big inspirations to me so naturally I’m also streaming his podcasts, and Tell ’em Steve-Dave. I also brought a stack of his movies along too. I’ve got all the bands on my ipod that made me want to do this as well. This obviously includes Blink 182, my biggest inspiration. They made me want to do what I do. I’ll be blasting some Starting Line, a bunch of PA kids who made it! SO here goes my adventure on the west coast!

It will be hard at first. I’ll miss my home and family. I’ll miss late night drinks with my friends. I miss my cat. But you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. I may have to mop floors and flip burgers for a while. But here its goes.

SOUNDS….

So SIN liked the mixes!  Just gotta add a few sound effects and then do a master CD for them.  Nothing major, expect it up as soon as they release it!  Also, last week I ran sound for SmartCEO’s Brava awards.  It went really well.  Sound check went great, but as always problems arose when we started.  I managed to fix them and in the end everyone was happy with how it sounded.  Live sound is a tricky thing to master, but I’m getting better with every gig!  Got a few other projects lined up and I hope they all work out!

Until next time,

John
